I, as a pet guardian of a dog who has had heartworms, been symptomatic with them, and has subsequently been treated……can say that perhaps the cure is worse than the disease. I, for one, will never allow any of my dogs to go through that pain again. As a healthcare professional, I am able to read a package insert and understand the ramifications of giving ANYONE, human, canine, or otherwise, a certain drug.
Pala, I don’t know where YOU live, but where I live, the chances of a dog developing heartworms is pretty good, and if you don’t believe it, look at all the rescued animals after Hurricane Katrina who contracted the disease.

I’ve not heard of heartworm tablets nearly killing a dog before na dI am very surprised. Obviously you have had personal experience though, I wonder how common it is

And if you’ve had a dog who has been nearly killed by heartworm medicine you’ll have to ask; is it better to intentionally poison my dog to avoid something that has almost no chance of happening, or should I try something else that I know won’t hurt him.

Trust me, I’ll never use those again.

While I probably agree with a lot of this post. The sad fact is: if you have ever had a dog who has had a heartworm and seen the pain and angst they go through, then you would have no hesitation in providing heartworm treat to them.
